Single Use Staff Clothing Helps Reduce HAIs

Mölnlycke Health Care is highlighting the benefits of single use staff clothing and scrub suits, to help reduce Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs). This follows the publication of a paper: ‘Nursing and physician attire as a possible source of nosocomial infections’.

Published recently in the American Journal of Infection Control, the paper by Yonit Wiener-Well et al, Jerusalem, points to reusable staff clothing as a potential source of nosocomial infections, i.e. HAIs.  The findings were based on a study conducted on the reusable clothes that nurses and physicians wear.  Both used and clothes fresh from the laundry and not yet worn were included in the test and examined for bacteria.

The study shows that 100 per cent of the clothes had bacteria and 63 per cent were colonized with potentially pathogenic bacteria.  S Aureus, including MRSA strains, was the most common pathogen found.  50 per cent of the scrub suits, intended for use in the operating theatre, were also contaminated with pathogens.

Over 1.4 million people worldwide suffer from HAIs and 1 in 10 patients become infected during their time in hospital.  One of the world’s leading manufacturers of single-use surgical products, Mölnlycke Health Care produces a range of single-use scrub suits and staff clothing under the BARRIER® brand.  The BARRIER Scrub Suit range has been developed to ensure both patient safety and comfort for healthcare professionals.  It includes a selection of different materials and sizes to suit all users’ needs and the diverse demands of different surgical procedures.
